The cornerstone for feng shui is the total understanding of nature and the taoist vision, both embracing the concept that everything is full of the life energy or light, called “chi” or “qui” (in Chinese) or “ki” (in Japanese). The basic concepts that could sway a feng shui analysis of a location, person or situation include the five elements and the yin and yang rule. Feng shui is created on the ancient symbols present in I Ching, the ancient Chinese oracle. These symbols are used in the octagonal grid, the Ba-Gua, that helps you understand or determine the various relations between the feng shui locations in the home or office and the various aspects of your life.

Feng shui is common to several different schools, and it involves several levels of learning and understanding, depending on the complexity of the information you have available to and actually get to internalize. The cures offered by feng shui for life improvement vary from the use of fountains, aquariums and crystals to the energy improvement by means of clocks, colors and mirrors. Light and colors make an important combination by the focus they can bring to a certain location. Most places characterized by “bad feng shui” suffer from lack of light and color.

The interaction of the foundational elements is another foundational aspect of feng shui; wood, fire, water, earth and metal can encourage productive or destructive circles depending on the preponderance they have in one’s zone of affect.

Each of the elements has a corresponding color; it is basic feng shui knowledge to know how to complement colors and balance an environment. The location of the elements in a area is not randomly done as it has to be determined by the octagonal grid, the Ba-Gua.

The core of the philosophy is the energy flow or lack of it. How objects are placed in relation to each other dictates this flow and has a negative or positive impact on the environment. Relationships, finance and health are affected by the quality of the energy. Many people arrange the contents of their homes, following the rules and recommendations of FengShui. (Some call it Fen Shui or FenShui but its a mistake)

Different places in the house have different roles and they have to be treated in a different way. There should be only one door for the bedroom and the bed must not be placed in between the door and the window as this could disturb your sleep. The bed should be made of wood and people should sleep at least 45cm above the floor and be facing the door. Pictures of wild animals or water as well as mirrors should be avoided. Thick curtains should drape the window and the walls should be painted in green,red or blue shades.

The stove and sink should not be adjacent in the kitchen as the proximity of fire and water can lead to conflict. Cookers should be positioned in the south corner, the room must have a wide entry and microwaves are not recommended. Feng Shui is also applied to dining rooms and living rooms. There must be at least one wall without a window and the paintwork must be in bright colors. Mirrors to reflect food on the table, the hanging of family pictures and television sets or hi-fi systems that stand at the west wall are among the elements that bring luck.
